More Than 35 Years of Design Experience
Andrew Burdett Design was established in 1999, making it the longest-established website design and creative agency in the Derbyshire Dales and the wider Peak District. Owner Andrew Burdett qualified as a graphic designer in 1991 and went on to work for publishing companies, a direct marketing company and an advertising agency before setting up Andrew Burdett Design.
Early in his career, Andrew also worked closely with developers at Stibo Datagraphics, part of a Danish foundation, on a groundbreaking content management system that automated catalogue design, production and workflow. The system brought together photographers, graphic designers, product managers, IT departments, pre-press specialists and printers, giving Andrew valuable early experience of how creative, technical and production teams can work together through digital technology.
Since establishing Andrew Burdett Design, Andrew has continued to apply and develop his extensive experience in graphic design, branding, print, advertising and project management, while embracing the growth of website design and digital marketing. Over the years, we’ve worked with local businesses, charities, public-sector bodies, NHS organisations, universities and international brands, delivering effective, integrated design and communications across both traditional and digital media.
Technology continues to evolve, but the fundamentals of successful communication remain remarkably consistent. Understanding audiences, developing clear messages, coordinating complex projects and creating professional user experiences are skills built through more than 35 years of practical design and communications experience.
Website Design Is About More Than Building Pages
Many people assume website design is primarily a technical discipline.
Technical knowledge is certainly important, but a successful website also relies on:
- Graphic design
- User experience
- Branding
- Photography
- Content structure
- Marketing
- Search engine optimisation
- Project management
A visually attractive website is of little value if it fails to engage visitors, communicate clearly or support business objectives. The most effective websites combine strong design and technical expertise with carefully structured content, clear messaging and an understanding of how people use websites.
The Value of a Design Background
Before many of today’s web designers entered the industry, traditional design agencies were already helping organisations communicate through branding, brochures, catalogues, advertising, exhibitions and marketing campaigns. This broader experience provides a deeper understanding of typography, layout, branding, visual hierarchy and customer communication.
A website should not be viewed as a standalone project. It is often part of a wider brand experience that includes printed materials, signage, social media, advertising and marketing. Ensuring that these different elements work together helps create a more consistent, professional and recognisable identity.
Why Project Management Matters
One area that is often overlooked when choosing a website designer is project management. Building a successful website involves far more than creating pages and uploading images, particularly when a project includes a large amount of content or requires input from several people.
Projects frequently require coordination between stakeholders, content providers, photographers, developers, marketing teams and external suppliers. Strong project management helps ensure that everything remains organised, deadlines are met and communication stays clear throughout the process, resulting in a smoother experience and a more successful outcome for the client.

Does Your Website Designer Have the Right Experience?
Not all website designers come from a professional design and communications background. When comparing companies, look beyond how long they have been building websites and consider the depth and breadth of their experience.
Does the designer have recognised design qualifications? Have they worked professionally across branding, print, advertising and digital communications? Can they manage complex projects involving different stakeholders and suppliers? Do they understand how design, content, technology and marketing must work together?
Andrew qualified as a graphic designer in 1990 and has worked continuously in design, marketing and communications ever since. Andrew Burdett Design was established in 1999, providing clients with more than 35 years of professional experience—not simply knowledge of how to build website pages.
Technology Changes. Experience Endures.
Since Andrew Burdett Design was established in 1999, we’ve seen the internet evolve from simple brochure websites to mobile-first design, e-commerce, social media integration, search engine optimisation and, more recently, artificial intelligence. Platforms, software and trends come and go, but the importance of understanding people, businesses and effective communication remains constant.
That combination of design experience, technical expertise and project management remains just as valuable today as it was when we first started designing websites more than 25 years ago. New technology can provide powerful tools, but it is experience that helps determine how those tools should be used to meet the needs of a business and its customers.
Choosing the Right Website Partner
When selecting a website designer, it’s worth looking beyond the technology they use. Consider their experience, the range of projects they have delivered, the industries they have worked with and the support they can provide after launch.
A successful website is rarely the result of technical knowledge alone. It is usually the product of experience, planning, creativity and a clear understanding of business objectives. These are qualities that develop over time and continue to add value long after a website goes live.
